Port Birmingham is comprised of 184 total acres, 125 acres and in use with another 59 acres to be developed. It has almost 1 ½ miles of river frontage with the capacity to store approximately 40 river barges on site at any time and to load barges at 5 different locations and unload barges at 2 locations. To put that in perspective from a rail car standpoint, Port Birmingham’s current capacity to store approximately 40 river barges is equal to about 600 rail cars or 6 full unit trains.

The five loading facilities are as follows;

Crane 614 is a 25 ton gantry crane with clamshell and hook capabilities. There is on dock rail and truck loading and unloading at this facility which means barge direct to rail or truck and vice versa is available along with barge direct to storage. This allows for maximum flexibility to move product efficiently. Bulk commodities and finished products can be handled at this load out
Crane 615 is a 23 ton gantry crane with clamshell capacity only at this time. There is on dock rail and truck at this location which allows for movement of commodity direct from barge to rail or truck or direct into storage. With some modification, this location could be converted into a full service load out facility. Bulk commodities such as coal and iron ore are handled here.
Conveyor 616 is a rapid load out conveyor system that has a bottom/end dump rail/truck unloading pit that can go direct to barge or to ground storage. This is the primary system for loading barges as a barge can be loaded in approximately 1- 1 1/2 hours compared to the 614 and 615 gantry crane systems that take approximately 8 hours to load or unload a barge. This conveyor system could be upgraded to load barges in 2 to 3 hours should the need arise. This conveyor system can handle bulk commodities such as ores, coal, coke, gypsum, cement and wood chips.
Direct Dump 617 is a direct truck to barge load out. This facility allows bulk commodities to be loaded directly into barge using gravity flow only. Commodities handled here include coal, ore, coke, stone, pig iron and gypsum. This is the fastest load out facility as a barge can be loaded here in approximately 2 hours.
Crane 618 is a 100 ton derrick that can load or unload structural or project cargo to or from a barge. The types of materials handled include heavy machinery, structural steel, coils, slabs and other project cargo. This facility has been severely under-utilized and is a unique service offered in this area.

Port Birmingham’s rail facilities are well designed and well built. There is a loop track and yard on the Port property with each having the capacity to handle a 75 to 100 car unit train for movement to and from the Port. Taking the yards into consideration that come with the Birmingham Terminal Railroad in Birmingham there is ample room to handle multiple unit trains to and from the Port.
