The Yellowstone Valley Railroad (YSVR) began operations August 15, 2005. Watco Companies acquired the railroad through a lease agreement with the BNSF. In 2009 the YSVR was awarded the BNSF Shortline Achievement Award for its development of Customers in the natural gas, crude oil and frac sand markets along with their focus on long-standing agriculture Customers. The Yellowstone Valley Railroad is located in Montana’s Yellowstone River Valley and is comprised of two segments totaling 171 miles. The northern segment, known as the “Scobey Line”, interchanges with the BNSF at Bainville and travels north to Plentywood, MT. The southern segment, known as the “Sidney line”, travels between two BNSF interchange points, Glendive and Snowden, MT. The YSVR’s office is located in Sidney, MT and the railroad, serving approximately 35 customers, is expected to move more than 14,000 carloads annually. Commodities being shipped are a combination of natural gas, crude oil, frac sand, sugar and agricultural products.
