Designation: Car Repairman Department: Switching Location: Western Pennsylvania Responsibilities: Cleans, repairs, inspects railway freight cars, tank cars and flatbed cars following federal and company guidelines and customer specifications, using cleaning equipment, sandblasting equipment, hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and measuring instruments. This is accomplished by performing all or any combination of the following duties: Inspects railroad cars for structural defects to ensure that they are in proper operating condition according to federal regulations, as well as company and customer specifications. May repair wooden sections, such as flooring and interior walls, straighten metal parts using hammer and sledge. May be required to lubricate sections of railcar such as boxcar doors, sweep and clean interior and exterior of railroad cars preparatory to use. May sweep or blow dirt from interior of railroad car using water hoses, brooms, air blowers, vacuums, shovels, brushes or cleaning solvents, and examine interior and exterior of tank cars for defects and cleanliness by passing light beam into car and viewing it through valve openings or entering car through the dome. May wash interior and write routine reports. May be asked to perform other duties as requested or required.
