The Alabama Southern Railroad (ABS) began operations on November 20, 2005 when Watco leased the railroad from the Kansas City Southern. The ABS consists of 103 miles of track running east from Artesia, Mississippi, to Brookwood, Alabama. The ABS interchanges with the Kansas City Southern at Artesia, with the CSX at Brookwood, and the NS at Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The ABS ships approximately 35,000 carloads of product annually for the energy, steel, paper, roofing, grain, and chemical industries.
